Start with two job titles
For your first job, shortlist two job titles whose everyday work interests you, then check the actual vacancies for eligibility and tasks. Match one college project, internship or other real experience to a task the employer needs done. You do not need to decide your entire career before sending an application.
If campus placements are approaching, or someone has offered a referral, start with the opening in front of you. “Any suitable job” gives that person very little to work with. “I am looking at junior developer and software tester jobs, and here is my project” makes the request clearer.
Job or role?
A job is a position with an employer. A role describes the responsibilities you take on. Two jobs called Software Engineer can involve very different work. One might focus on building features; another might involve maintaining an existing application and resolving support requests.
Search using job titles. Decide using the work, eligibility and conditions behind them. Later in your career, the scope of a role, such as owning a system or leading a team, can matter more than its title.
What the latest hiring data shows
Naukri JobSpeak reported that white collar hiring on its platform was 14 percent higher in August 2026 than a year earlier. Fresher hiring was 15 percent higher and IT hiring was 11 percent higher. This is a current signal from one major job platform, not the number of every vacancy in India and not a promise that any applicant will be shortlisted.
Use the signal to keep perspective, not to chase a headline. Search the actual job title and location, read the eligibility and look for tasks that repeat across current openings. A growing category can still be competitive, and the right starting point still depends on the work you want to try.
Find your starting point
BTech or BE in CSE or IT, BCA, BSc Computer Science or IT, and MCA: compare AI application, junior data, software engineering and AI evaluation openings. These are options to investigate, not jobs every graduate is automatically eligible for.
BA Journalism, BJMC, BAJMC, BAMMC or a mass communication qualification: compare reporter or copy editor work with PR executive or social media executive work. Reporting serves a news audience; brand communication serves an organisation’s communication goal. The degree name alone does not make the choice.
BCom, BBA, BA, BSc or another qualification: try the same exercise with an accounts assistant, operations executive, sales executive or another relevant opening. Check the actual qualification requirements. These examples are starting points, not a complete career list.
Check the details employers use
For fresher hiring, read the eligible degree, graduation batch, marks or CGPA rules, backlog policy and campus restrictions before preparing for an assessment. TCS’s 2026 BSc Ignite page is one example of an employer stating such conditions. Other employers and hiring rounds set their own rules.
Also check the city, office or remote arrangement, shifts, language requirements and whether the position is an internship, apprenticeship, contract or regular employment. If pay is stated as CTC, ask for the fixed pay, variable pay and deductions separately before comparing offers. Do not assume the headline figure is your monthly take home pay.
Keep the original vacancy link and the date you checked it. Ask the employer when a condition is unclear; do not guess eligibility from a forwarded message.
Try this today
This is a small LNR planning exercise, not a labour market survey. Use your own notes; there is nothing to upload.
- 1Collect three recent vacancies for each of your two job titles in a location you can consider.
- 2Write the repeated tasks and the stated must have requirements. Keep eligibility separate from skills you can practise.
- 3Choose one real example you can explain. Write what you did, how you checked it and what you still need to learn.
- 4Apply where the requirements fit, or choose one small task to practise before the next application. Set a review date.
Example
A fresher example
A BCA student compares junior developer and software tester openings. For a college library application, she can explain the search feature she built. To explore testing, she writes steps to reproduce a failed search and records the expected result. She labels both as college or practice work, not client experience.
Make a referral easier
Send the job link, a short reason you fit the stated requirements and one example of relevant work. Ask whether the person is comfortable referring you. A referral is an introduction, not a promise of an interview.
Template
Adapt this message
Hello [name], I am applying for [job title] at [company]. The opening asks for [requirement]. In my [project or internship], I [specific contribution]. Here is the vacancy and my resume. If you feel my background fits, would you be comfortable referring me? No problem if not.
Keep the market in view
A slow response is not proof that you chose the wrong degree or that your resume is the only problem. India’s education to employment transition is also shaped by the availability and quality of jobs. Review what you can improve without turning every rejection into a judgement about yourself.
A couple of questions
- Can I apply without an internship?
- Check the vacancy. Where prior experience is not required, a college project, volunteering or clearly labelled practice work can help you discuss relevant skills. It does not replace a mandatory qualification or experience requirement.
- Does this work outside India?
- Yes. Keep the shortlist and work example exercise. Replace Indian batch and campus checks with the qualifications, language, work permission and hiring rules for the country you are applying in.
